New contract helps Motherwell Bridge set designs on Qatar

Motherwell Bridge, the Lanarkshire based engineering contractor, has announced details of a contract that will see it design and engineer three bulk storage tanks in the State of Qatar.

Qatar Engineering and Construction (QCon), a subsidiary of quoted company Qatar Shipping, has appointed Motherwell Bridge to design two 88.5 metre diameter tanks and one 77 metre diameter tank, each tank being 22 metres high.

QCon, a leading engineering, procurement and construction contractor, will then construct the tanks for Dolphin Energy who will use them for sulphur recovery and storage at Ras Laffan in Qatar, the site of the world’s largest gas fields and from where much is exported.

Over the course of the past year Motherwell Bridge has been following up enquiries from the Middle East and Africa after it established a new subsidiary Motherwell Bridge International Ltd.

This is the company’s second major contract since re-entering the region and it now has a full-time team permanently based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ian Ford, Managing Director of Motherwell Bridge International Ltd, said: “We have been exploring opportunities in the Middle East and Africa for the past couple of years now and have been re-acquainting people with the Motherwell Bridge name, which is still well known outside the UK.

“An important part of our group strategy has been to seek new business overseas that will complement our work in the UK and I’m delighted that we’ve secured this contract from QCon.

“It’s significant because it proves we can work successfully with regional-based contractors and I’ve every confidence that it will help to generate further enquiries.”

Motherwell Bridge International is headed up by managing director Ian Ford and regional director Bill Reid, who has over 30 years experience in the region having worked there with both the Wood Group and Weir. Bill is now based in Dubai.
